Needles grow in bundles of three, 8-10 inches long. |
It is the only Sierra tree that bears needles in groups of two. |
White fir is named for its long, gray-green needles and silvery bark. In contrast, red fir has short dense needles and bright red inner bark. Fir cones grow upright instead of hanging from boughs. |
The slender cones are six to twelve inches long. |
Note the dark red outer bark; the inner bark is bright red. Like the white fir, the red fir has a symmetrical shape and upright cones. |
